John Rocheleau, creates each pipe entirely by hand. Bowls, shanks, and stem shapes, are never turned on a lathe; they are fashioned freehand. John prefers working this way, because it allows him to be more creative. He works with the feel of the briar and intuition to bring out subtle shaping that could never be known in advance. The major shaping is done with files and sandpaper. The elegance and grace of his designs result from his long experience as a professional artist, and this traditional manner of working. The briar used for each pipe is selected from the very best grade of Plateaux Briar. "My philosophy and purpose in pipemaking is to infuse the highest artistry and quality into the pipes I create, and to make them available at reasonable prices. As a professional artist in painting and sculpture, I view my pipemaking as a practical art. Unlike paintings or sculpture, a pipe is used and handled daily by it's owner, for life. The relationship is perhaps even more intimate than owning a painting. I find that satisfying."
