Meerschaum has been fashioned into pipes since the mid 1700's, far longer than its briar brethren. The word Meerschaum is German for "sea foam". This material is mined primarily in Turkey, where most of these pipes are made. Renowned for its light-weight, porosity and clean smoking characteristics, meerschaum has a huge number of supporters and collectors within the pipe smoking community. Not only do Meerschaum pipes provide a pure tasting smoke but over time they also color with use, going from pure white to dark ambers, reddish-browns and even black. Most Meerschaums are carved into various faces, animals and ornate patterns. However it is not rare to see them fashioned into traditional pipes shapes. Every smoker should pick up one up for their collection and experience it for themselves.
