Meerschaum has been fashioned into pipes since the mid 1700's, far longer than its briar brethren. The word Meerschaum is German for "sea foam"; the material is mined primarily in Turkey, where most of these pipes are made. Renowned for its light-weight, porosity and clean smoking characteristics, meerschaum has many supporters and collectors within the pipe smoking community. Not only does Meerschaum provide a pure tasting smoke but it also colors over time from use, going from pure white to dark ambers, reddish-browns and even black, with gorgeous colored pipes highly sought after. Most Meerschaums are carved into various faces, animals and ornate patterns, however it is not rare to see Meershaums fashioned into traditional pipes shapes. Every pipe smoker should pick up a Meershcaum for their collection and enjoy a great smoking, beautiful looking pipes that will develop a wonderful patina over time. All pipes are carved from solid meerschaum blocks.
