Just getting into pipe smoking and this is my first pipe--because well, you can't beat the price! From what I've found, the key to keeping it lit is all in how you pack it. Use the common 3 layer method: sprinkle the tobacco in, gently push it down with your finger, sprinkle it again and push it down a little more, sprinkle again and then pack the top layer with a little more firmness. You know you've packed it right if you draw on the pipe (after it's packed but before you light it) and the resistance feels like sucking liquid through a straw. If it is less resistant, you've packed it too lose. If it feels like a milkshake, you've packed it too tight. After you've packed it with this method, do your charring light and then tamp it down with your pipe tool. After this, light it one more time and as you puff, pipe should stay lit for a good while. As I said, for the price, you can't beat it if you just want to learn pipe smoking and see if it's for you!
